    Like a Child

    T'mimus up'shitus. Simplicity.

I've heard it said that if there were such a thing as a catchphrase among the Breslover chasidim, it would probably be "t'mimus up'shitus." There is a simple joy and wonderment we experience as children that's slowly and methodically chipped away at as we get older. I know that's been true for me. But so many of our tzadikim, especially the chasidic masters, caution us to hold on to this childlike simplicity, and to continue nurturing it as we grow.

It's true, G!d gave us the Torah to study as a means of connecting with the Divine on our deepest, even most intimate levels. We constantly need to learn more torah - I know I definitely do. And without the torah knowledge we gain, we couldn't grow spiritually at all. But then, how are we to act? With arrogance towards others about the torah we've acquired? With a paralyzing seriousness? Not at all, as Rabbeinu ז"ל reminds us in many different ways. We should act with simplicity. Joy and wonderment. T'mimus up'shitus. Like a child.

Oh, so easy, like a child, like a child
Reading me is easy like a child, like a child
Marry me and maybe we could make it for a while
Oh, so easy, like a child, like a child
It could be so easy, like a child

Keep writing verses on my skin ‘til it’s right
Leave all your burning black lines on my white
Make it about how I’ll feel
Every drop of ink that’s real
    ‘Cause I’m not in control
    And you’re not in control
And all our armies drowned an hour ago

Show every letter to me when you’re done
Don’t close the cover if you’re still having fun
But I don’t want to make a plan
And I don’t even think we can
    If I’m not in control
    And you’re not in control
    And all our armies drowned

Oh, so easy, like a child, like a child...

Surrender your last character and let her [ ' letter ' :'ק ] fall on me
Soldier, stop your civilizing; let it all come easy
Soldier, spin around with me and let yourself go wild
Dive into me dizzy like a child
Dive into me dizzy like a child

    Every mistake that you erase
Takes a layer off in place
    Oh, I’m not in control
    And you’re not in control
But all our armies stood their ground
And fought those words the whole way down
    ‘Til every flaw was found

Oh, so easy, like a child, like a child...
